RTP Company, headquartered in Winona, Minn., is a global compounder of custom engineered thermoplastics. The company has over 20 manufacturing plants located in the United States, Mexico, Europe, Singapore and China. RTP Company’s engineers develop customized thermoplastic compounds in over 60 different engineering resin systems for applications requiring color, conductive, elastomeric, flame retardant, high temperature, structural, and wear-resistant properties.

The Fabrication Technician is responsible for the fabrication, repair, and modification of plastic extrusion equipment.


  • Perform necessary welding in production environment
  • Operate lathes, drill presses, grinders, and other machine shop equipment
  • Reading blueprints, running a mill and lathe (machining), equipment rigging and installation, knowledge of hydraulics and gear boxes, assembly/dis-assembly of equipment, routine maintenance, and repair of plastic extruders, blenders, and other related equipment
  • Reading blueprints
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Abilities

  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and make decisions within the scope of the position
  • Must be able to work at various heights
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be willing to travel on an as-needed basis
  • Must be capable of multi-tasking and working both as a team and independently

Education and Experience:

  • Must have associates degree in welding; experience may be considered in lieu of form education (3-5 years)
  • Must have welding experience (MIG and TIG)
  • Must have plumbing experience
  • Must have prior fabricating experience and the ability to read drawings

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; talk and/or hear
  • Occasionally required to sit
  • Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 60 pounds
  • Occasionally handle (with mechanical equipment) up to 250 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities may require close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
  • Requires the use of safety equipment as dictated by the work area such as safety glasses and shoes, respirators, face shield, hearing protection, Tyveksuit, gloves, etc.
  • Exposure to noise levels above the OSHA action level may be possible
  • Proper personal safety equipment is to be used while performing this job as pointed out by plant safety procedures
  • Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, dust, fumes, airborne particles, chemical dust, and risk of electric shock and non-hazardous chemical agents
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles
  • Occasionally exposed to hazardous materials as defined by the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard
  • Occasional travel to other locations may be required
