Technological advance is gained only by overcoming a technological challenge. In the electronics industry, these challenges often involve the issues of electromagnetic compatibility, reliable electrical conductivity, and static dissipation. Cybershield, Inc. has become a world leader in metallized plastics by providing a solution that allows their customers to overcome those specific challenges.

Cybershield’s Exact? technology allows precise, selective plating of plastic materials. Circuit patterns can be applied directly onto plastic housings and components in two and three dimensions. 3-D patterns can be applied with lines and spaces down to 0.005 inch (0.127 mm) with a resolution of 0.001 inch (0.025 mm).

Kenwood Martin, vice president for business development at Cybershield, said, "The ExactTM process enables designers to integrate electrical and mechanical functionality into a single plastic part. The net result is reduced lines in the build of Materials (BOM), increased reliability and enhanced function and performance of electronic devices." Cybershield’s technology enables antenna, circuitry, interconnection, shielding, and thermal management solutions to be integrated into plastic housings and substrates. It can lead to significant improvements in size, cost, and performance of an electronic device. Product cost, size, and weight advantages are enjoyed over existing technologies, using molded plastics to reduce parts count and assembly costs.

RTP Company produces a line of specialty compounds compatible with plating and coating processes. Originally performed for decorative purposes, metallization of plastics is now seen as the key to providing the effective shielding and conductivity required in modern electronic devices.

Cybershield and RTP Company have joined their technologies to provide true customization of metallized plastics for the electronics industry. Martin said, "We saw in RTP Company the potential for a union that is unique in its ability to provide specifically engineered electronics solutions. RTP Company has real expertise in providing exact performance in plastics. There is a genuine synergy with our abilities to identify and meet the plating needs of electronics manufacturers." Martin also cites RTP Company’s expertise with a wide range of materials and its experience in customizing those materials as key to the arrangement.

Platable systems from RTP Company optimized for Cybershield’s technology include: syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS), polypropylene (PP), polyphthalamide (PPA), Polycarbonate/ABS alloys (PC/ABS), polyetherimide (PEI), and liquid crystal polymers (LCP). Further, RTP Company can customize substrates with exact combinations of glass or mineral reinforcements, flame retardants, and flow enhancers.
