Facing ESD Challenges

PermaStat® Provides Cost-Saving Solutions for ESD Protection

When Iomega was faced with specifying a material for the face plate for its revolutionary REV™ drive, preventing ESD was their main objective. “ESD protection was an absolute requirement for the success of the product,” commented Craig Rupp, Design Engineer, Iomega Corporation. “We had two options. We could have added sheet metal parts to achieve ESD protection, or use the plastic in the face plate to accomplish the protection. We chose plastic, which allowed us to save costs and still meet our material requirements.”

Utilizing high performance PermaStat® technology, the engineers at RTP Company custom formulated an RTP 300 Series static dissipative polycarbonate compound. The material was custom colored in an impact-modified flame retardant formula carrying a UL Yellow Card.

RTP Company’s complete line of PermaStat® compounds offer permanent static dissipation properties that won’t migrate or bloom to the surface of the part. Because they are non-sloughing, these compounds are ideal for applications requiring either dust-free or static-free environments. PermaStat® compounds feature a consistent surface resistivity of 1010 to 1011 ohm/sq and are available in a wide range of resin systems. The all-polymeric compounds are fully colorable and readily meet particulation requirements in environments that must remain dust-free.

When designing its REV™ drive, Iomega relied on RTP Company to develop a conductive compound. PermaStat® provided a cost-saving solution to Iomega’s ESD requirements, while maintaining the reliability that has made Iomega an industry leader in data storage solutions for 25 years.
