Value-Added Products and Services Essential to Winning World-Class Alliance

Dick Curtin, President of Tuthill Plastics Group, has substantially grown the organization by leading his team into the “learning zone,” where Tuthill is constantly challenged to continually improve. This philosophy cascades down to Tuthill’s suppliers, who are considered integral team members.

“We look for highly motivated suppliers, like RTP Company, who continually improve their efforts so we can have a world-class business alliance,” explained Curtin. “RTP Company is very good from a value standpoint. They help us select the right materials and talk with our customers, which in turn builds value for customers.”

Tuthill Transfer Systems is both a sister company and customer of Tuthill Plastics Group. Andy Kosiak, Vice President of Sales at Tuthill Transfer Systems, echoed Curtin’s sentiments. “Only our suppliers can help us truly understand how their products can fulfill the needs of the project from a material perspective and from a perspective of timely shipments, consistent quality, and supportive problem solving.”

Development teams in the Tuthill Business System (TBS), modeled after the Toyota Production System popularly described as Lean, work directly with suppliers to make sure products meet important customer values. RTP Company provides value-added service to these Lean product development teams on many different levels for applications ranging from fluid handling pumps to defense programs.

“Not only is RTP Company nimble with the ability to quickly adapt its custom compounds as only a privately-owned company can, they also help us improve our processes by offering value-added services such as CAE mold flow analysis utilized with some of our larger defense programs,” said Curtin. “When this type of value adding occurs, the customer wins.”

RTP Company began its own Lean journey in 2006. Two of the first lean initiatives included a “kaizen” in the Winona Pete McCamley R&D Lab and “value streaming” the color sample process. To date, kaizen events have been implemented globally at RTP Company and have touched on almost every facet of the company.
